Fun and Easy Dental STEM Experiments for Kids!

Happy Dentists Day! 🦷

Celebrate with us by adding a splash of STEM to dental care! Explore engaging experiments that make learning about oral health an exciting adventure for kids. Grab your imaginary lab coats and dive into the world of tooth-themed STEM activities. Let the fun-filled learning begin

1. Toothpaste Eruption

Materials:

  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Dish soap
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Small containers
  • Craft sticks or spoons
  • Tray or plastic tablecloth for easy cleanup

Instructions:

  1. Set up the experiment area on a tray or covered surface.
  2. Mix a tablespoon of baking soda with dish soap in each small container.
  3. Optionally, add food coloring for a colorful eruption.
  4. Have kids spread the mixture onto tooth models or cutouts using craft sticks or spoons.
  5. Pour vinegar over the baking soda-coated "teeth" and observe the foaming eruption.
  6. Discuss how this mimics how toothpaste helps clean teeth.

2. Eggshell Enamel Investigation

Materials:

  • Clean eggshells
  • Vinegar
  • Toothbrush
  • Fluoride toothpaste
  • Water
  • Timer

Instructions:

  1. Soak eggshells in vinegar overnight to simulate enamel erosion.
  2. Remove eggshells, rinse, and let them dry.
  3. Divide eggshells into groups.
  4. Brush one group with fluoride toothpaste for a designated time.
  5. Brush another group with water.
  6. Compare effects and discuss how fluoride protects enamel.

3. Flossing Fun

Materials:

  • Playdough
  • Yarn or string
  • Craft sticks
  • Plastic beads or small objects (representing food particles)

Instructions:

  1. Mold playdough into small mounds to represent teeth.
  2. Insert craft sticks into the playdough to act as gums.
  3. Tie yarn or string around plastic beads to simulate dental floss.
  4. Encourage kids to "floss" between craft stick teeth, removing playdough plaque.
  5. Discuss the importance of flossing for healthy teeth and gums.

4. Marshmallow Toothpick Structures

Materials:

  • Marshmallows
  • Toothpicks
  • Dental floss
  • Timer
  • Small plastic cups

Instructions:

  1. Provide marshmallows and toothpicks to children.
  2. Challenge them to build a tooth structure using marshmallows as the base and toothpicks as the structure.
  3. Set a timer for a designated time period.
  4. Discuss construction challenges and the importance of structural integrity.
  5. Introduce dental floss as a tool for cleaning between the "teeth."

5. pH Scale Testing with Juices

Materials:

  • Various juices (orange juice, apple juice, cranberry juice, etc.)
  • pH testing strips
  • Disposable cups
  • Toothpick or stirring rod

Instructions:

  1. Pour small amounts of different juices into separate disposable cups.
  2. Provide pH testing strips to each child.
  3. Have them dip the testing strip into each juice and observe the color change.
  4. Use the pH scale to determine acidity or alkalinity.
  5. Discuss how acidic beverages can affect tooth enamel and the importance of tooth-friendly drinks.

How Kids Learn STEM Through Dental Experiments

Science:

  1. Toothpaste Eruption: Understand chemical changes through the reaction of baking soda and vinegar.
  2. Eggshell Enamel Investigation: Learn about enamel erosion and the protective role of fluoride.

Technology:

  1. Flossing Fun: Introduce using tools for oral hygiene with simple materials like playdough and yarn.
  2. pH Scale Testing with Juices: Explore pH testing strips to determine juice acidity, integrating technology.

Engineering:

  1. Marshmallow Toothpick Structures: Develop problem-solving and spatial reasoning skills.
  2. Toothpaste Eruption: Apply simple engineering concepts like containment and observation.

Math:

  1. Eggshell Enamel Investigation: Introduce measurement and comparison concepts in timing brushing.
  2. pH Scale Testing with Juices: Use basic math skills for observation and interpretation.

These dental-themed STEM experiments engage children in hands-on learning, fostering curiosity and critical thinking while reinforcing essential STEM concepts. Let's inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and dental health enthusiasts! 🦷🔬
